3DMark Vantage:

3DMark® Vantage is the new industry standard PC gaming performance benchmark from Futuremark, newly designed for Windows Vista and DirectX10. It includes two new graphics tests, two new CPU tests, several new feature tests, and support for the latest hardware. 3DMark® Vantage is based on a completely new rendering engine, developed specifically to take full advantage of DirectX10, the new graphics API from Microsoft.  3DMark Vantage can also test your video card in several different ways.

For the purposes of our bench, we will be testing with the Performance, High, and Extreme Presets.  Here are our results:

Vantage Performance:

  CPU Graphics Total
4890 2GB 25049 10341 P12120
5770 25114 8701 P10400
4870X2 25164 15717 P17345
5870 24988 16061 P17636

In this test, the HD5870 beats out the HD4870X2 by nearly 300 points, building a 1.67% lead.

Vantage High:

  CPU Graphics Total
4890 2GB 25173 6459 H7269
5770 24925 5713 H6459
4870X2 25016 10161 H11155
5870 25013 11059 H12069

For the High Preset, the 5870 takes an impressive 8.2% lead over the 4870X2.  This is nearly double the HD5770, so everything is scaling pretty nice so far.

Vantage Extreme:

  CPU Graphics Total
4890 2GB 24927 4602 X4798
5770 25055 4114 X4294
4870X2 24905 7396 X7665
5870 25013 7952 X8233

In the Extreme preset, the HD5870 beats out the 4870X2 by 7.4%, not bad at all.  It also beats out the 5770 by nearly 4,000 points.

3DMark06:

Futuremark's 3dMark06 has long been the go-to benchmarking tool when it comes to synthetic benchmarking.  Love it or hate it, there is no question that 3DMark06 has been the measuring stick of video card performance industry wide for several years.

I will be using Version 1.1.0 professional.  The free downloadable version can be found here.

CPU SM 2.0 SM 3.0 Total
4890 2GB 7012 6932 8212 18705
5770 6883 6614 7673 17758
4870X2 7001 9944 12062 25336
5870 6919 10159 11738 25172

In 3DMark06, the HD5870 actually lost to the HD4870X2 by 164 points, or 0.65%.  I would say this is pretty well within the margin of error and call this a tie.  Both scored around 7500 points higher than the 5770.

The Other 3DMarks:

3DMark05 GT1 GT2 GT3 Total
4870X2 119.5 91.6 239.2 34464
5870 120.7 92.7 194.3 32392

In '05, the 4870X2 pulls ahead again, this time by 2072 points, or 6.4%.

3DMark03 GT1 GT2 GT3 GT4 Total
4870X2 1272.9 744 583.7 729.8 92557
5870 1306 745 561.3 519.6 83639

In '03, the 4870X2 beats the 5870 by 8,918 points or 10.6%, which I find strange since older benches are usually not kind to Crossfire/SLI setups.

3DMark01SE Total
4870X2 54094
5870 62857

In the classic 3DMark01, the 5870 pulls out a win, beating the 4870X2 by 8763 points, or 16.2%.  I think for the Futuremark tests, it is safe to call it a draw.
