3DMark Vantage:

3DMark® Vantage is the new industry standard PC gaming performance benchmark from Futuremark, newly designed for Windows Vista and DirectX10. It includes two new graphics tests, two new CPU tests, several new feature tests, and support for the latest hardware. 3DMark® Vantage is based on a completely new rendering engine, developed specifically to take full advantage of DirectX10, the new graphics API from Microsoft.  3DMark Vantage can also test your video card in several different ways.

For the purposes of our bench, we will be testing with the Performance, High, and Extreme Presets.  Here are our results:

Vantage Performance:

  CPU Graphics Total
4890 2GB 25049 10341 P12120
5770 25114 8701 P10400

In this test, the HD5770 loses to the HD4890 by 16.54%.  Given the similar clocks, I would expect this to be due to the 128-bit memory controller.

Vantage High:

  CPU Graphics Total
4890 2GB 25173 6459 H7269
5770 24925 5713 H6459

For the High Preset, the 4890 takes a 12.5% lead over the HD5770.

Vantage Extreme:

  CPU Graphics Total
4890 2GB 24927 4602 X4798
5770 25055 4114 X4294

On the Extreme Preset, the HD4890 takes a 11.7% lead over the HD5770.  This brings up a rather interesting trend.  Usually, when you have one card that is better than the other, you will see that the scores are closest at the Performance setting, and any weaknesses are exacerbated at the higher settings.  However, in the case of the HD5770 and the HD4890, the performance gets closer as the settings increase.  This would seem to imply that the memory bus has less effect as the resolution is increased, which is definitely counter-intuitive.

3DMark06:

Futuremark's 3dMark06 has long been the go-to benchmarking tool when it comes to synthetic benchmarking.  Love it or hate it, there is no question that 3DMark06 has been the measuring stick of video card performance industry wide for several years.

I will be using Version 1.1.0 professional.  The free downloadable version can be found here.

CPU SM 2.0 SM 3.0 Total
4890 2GB 7012 6932 8212 18705
5770 6883 6614 7673 17758

In 3DMark06, the HD4890 beats out the HD5770 in the SM2.0 test by 4.8%, in the SM3.0 test by 7%, and the total score by 5.3%.
