3DMark Vantage:

3DMark® Vantage is the new industry standard PC gaming performance benchmark from Futuremark, newly designed for Windows Vista and DirectX10. It includes two new graphics tests, two new CPU tests, several new feature tests, and support for the latest hardware. 3DMark® Vantage is based on a completely new rendering engine, developed specifically to take full advantage of DirectX10, the new graphics API from Microsoft.  3DMark Vantage can also test your video card in several different ways.

For the purposes of our bench, we will be testing with the Performance, High, and Extreme Presets.  Here are our results:

Vantage Performance:

  CPU Graphics Total
4870 12452 9199 P9842
4890 12418 10099 P10593
4870X2 12480 14602 P14007
4890 Crossfire 12477 16302 P15142

In this test, the 4890 takes a 7.6% lead over the Toxic 4870, and the 4890 Crossfire takes an 8.1% lead.  This test is the most CPU bound, however, so I would expect the other presets to show a larger margin.

Vantage High:

  CPU Graphics Total
4870 12582 5850 H6361
4890 12278 6490 H6984
4870X2 12554 9872 H10199
4890 Crossfire 12446 11534 H11662

For the High Preset, the 4890 takes a 9.8% lead over the Toxic, while the 4890 Crossfire takes a 14.3% advantage over the X2.

Vantage Extreme:

  CPU Graphics Total
4870 12370 4140 X4283
4890 12407 4607 X4757
4870X2 12391 7294 X7447
4890 Crossfire 12414 8505 X8641

On Extreme, the 4890 extends its lead to 11.1% over the 4870, while the 4890 Crossfire takes 16%.

3DMark06:

Futuremark's 3dMark06 has long been the go-to benchmarking tool when it comes to synthetic benchmarking.  Love it or hate it, there is no question that 3DMark06 has been the measuring stick of video card performance industry wide for several years.

I will be using Version 1.1.0 professional.  The free downloadable version can be found here.

CPU SM 2.0 SM 3.0 Total
4870 4398 5894 7131 15186
4890 4332 6036 7329 15448
4870X2 4388 6694 9265 17767
4890 Crossfire 4402 6695 9507 17985

3DMark06 tells us a different story; the 4890 takes a 1.7% lead while the 4890 Crossfire solution takes a 1.2% lead. Not much difference here, likely due to the CPU bound nature of the test.
