Hiper Type-R 480 Watt Power Supply Review
The good folks over at
Hiper are back. This time with
their hot new Type-R 480 Watt PS, model HPU-4M480. Traditionally the
Type-R designation is used in car racing. Will the Type-R designation hold
true in computer power supplies? Lets find out if the latest Hiper
power supply really is up to speed!

Hyper has chosen a more traditional
approach in their box art. The simple packaging emphasizes several key
reasons to give this unit a send look. Most notably are the 3 year
warranty and the AMD Global partner logo. Both these selling points ensure
your PSU is well tested and built to last.

Inside the box we find the usual
accessories. The owners manual is quite thick featuring not only a large
selection of supported languages but also a wealth of unexpected information.
Included are pin outs, oscilloscope readings and voltage ratings. The
HPU-4M480 is fully compliant with the ATX 2.2 standard.

Like most premium non-modular power
supplies, the HPU-4M480 provides a wealth of connectors. Hiper refers to
this color scheme as Black Label. The black theme is carried out in the cable
sleeving and even the Molex connectors. Hiper also makes this unit
available in a Red Label and Blue Label to match your build.

The body of the PSU is made of 1.0mm thick
mesh. Hiper has chosen to go with a single 120mm fan for active cooling,
depending on the additional air flow created by the mesh to help dissipate heat.

Inside we find two medium size heat sinks
that help keep the weight down to just 3.05 kg (about 6.75 lb.) The clear
film prevents hot air from escaping back into the case from the left, the side
most often facing the open center of your build.

A closer look at the 120mm reveals a
standard brushless ball bearing unit. The Hiper website incorrectly lists
this as a 1500 RPM 80mm fan, so no accurate specs were available at this time.
