Enermax ECO80+ 620W PSU Review

Noise and Heat:

The beauty of an energy efficient power supply is that less energy is wasted in the form of heat.  In turn, the less heat a power supply uses, the slower the fan spins, and the quieter the unit tends to be.  This is definitely the case for the ECO80+, as we found during testing that the unit just didn't get all that hot.  In fact, measuring the temperature of the casing on the power supply where the air escapes through the honeycomb grille only got to 30 degrees Celsius as measured by an infrared thermometer.  This is only five degrees Celsius over room temperature.  As a result, the power supply was not only exceptionally cool, but quiet as well.

Conclusion:

While there are many power supplies that have much higher capacity, and are much more flashy, sometimes what we need is something that just works.  The ECO80+ does just that, and without any complaint.  There is no doubt that this unit should be more than sufficient for any single-GPU system on the market today.  Add on top of that the very cool and quiet performance of this unit, and the vast majority of users should be very pleased.

While I am sure someone will read this review and think to themselves about how this unit should get docked because of its lack of modular cables, I should point out that the Enermax Liberty ECO 620W is essentially an identical unit to the ECO80+ that does feature a modular cable interface, for an extra $30.  So, Enermax should really get some kudos for putting the same quality platform at a cheaper price point, thus giving deal hunters something to rejoice about.

Pros:

  • Same quality Enermax Liberty power supply in a cheaper market segment

  • High efficiency means cooler and quieter operation

  • Competitively priced

Cons:

  • Price could be more competitive
