With the packaging and features out of the way,
lets take a closer look at the actual X4. As you can see from
this stock photo, the design is dominated by the 135 MM fan on the
bottom and the new modular design shown here on the back. The
new black finish is rather hard to photograph in the wild though not
quite as shiny as this shot would lead you to believe. The X4
will eventually be offered in 500W, 600W, 750W, 850W, 1050W, 1200W
and a massive 1600W versions though some may not be available right
away. Unlike the larger Ultra 100W units we have seen in the
past, the X4 850 is a more standard size.

Here is a closer look at the sides and the new X4
logo. This really does look sharp in person and looks so much
better than the standard labeling you usually see through a windowed
installation.

The back of the unit is composed of the usual
switch and socket set in a honeycomb mesh designed to maximize the
airflow generated by that 135mm fan. As with all of Ultras
high end power supplies, the X4 850W features active PFC.

And here is that ugly top we have been talking
about. It's really not that bad, but I am still glad it
doesn't show in most installations. Thank you Ultra!

And finally, a closer look at the actual label.
Ultra does a solid job of concentrating the bulk of the power to the
+12V rails where you will most likely need it. Even with some
of the power hungry video cards we have seen here at the Club, 720W
should be more than able to handle most multi-card installations.
Install:
I installed the Ultra X4 850W into my new NZXT
Panzerbox case.
This AMD build is based on the
Gigabyte
GA-MA790GP-DS4H
Motherboard using the 790GX chipset.
The build includes an
AMD 7850 Black Edition processor cooled by a Ultra ChillTec cooler,
an NZXT Sentury 2 fan controller, a VisionTek HD3870 X2 Overclocked
Edition video card and a 4 GB kit of Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400
Memory.
Storage was provided by a 500 GB Seagate SATA II drive and a
Plextor 16x DVD burner.

Even with the larger design of the Panzerbox,
I had no trouble reaching every part of the case with enough room to
spare for hiding most cables behind the drive cage. The
Panzerbox design even has venting for the power supply that allowed
me to mount the X4 with the fan out towards the left side. I
have to admit its taking a bit of vanity over design, but the case
temps never got out of a normal range thanks to the great case
cooling on hand. Take a look:

The X4 was installed using the included vibration
dampener and black thumb screws. As you can see, there is plenty of cable length.
All thats missing is a final bit of cable management and we are set.
The Ultra cables can be tied using the attached velcro or one of the
several black cable ties included in the box.
