Power Watcher PW-480-102DF 480w Power Supply Review

The power supply has historically been one of the most overlooked pieces of any high end PC.  Over the last year, PC power has come to the fore front as high end consumers suddenly found the latest hardware both hungry for power and requiring a wide variety of new cables.  With so many good power supplies on the market, it takes something more to stand out from the crowd.  High Power may have what you are looking for in their Power Watcher line of power supplies. Lets take a closer look.

The PW-480-102DF is High Power's latest offering.  The packaging is rather Spartan and does not list any power distribution data on the outside of the box.  As you can see from the box art, High Power's Power Watcher offers you the ability to view a display of your real-time power consumption via a free drive bay.  It may seem like all we have here is a cleaver gimmick, but there is much more to this PSU.

Opening the box, we find the accessories are separately boxed and labeled.  The extra cabling for your SLI and 24 pin power are visible on the top.  The box even has a nice carry handle.

Opening the pretty little boxes gives us a standard power cable and our first look at the display panel.

Moving on to the PSU cables, we find every cable is nicely covered in color coded loom. The cables are also much longer than normal, I was able to reach the bottom of my case with the first plug on the string and still have plenty of slack.  This would be perfect for an oversized case or routing the cables in a non traditional way to hide them from sight. Very nice.

As you can see, the the PW-480-102DF has an abundance of power on the +5V and +3.3V rails and is pretty average in its +12V rail.  More than enough power for a machine loaded with add-ins and accessories.
