The
more things change, the more they stay the same. Well, there are some
things that I wish DID stay more like the original and keyboards are
probably my number one pick. Now I understand that technological
improvements have led to more comfortable typing styles, but you are NOT
going to convince me to EVER hook an Ergonomic Keyboard up to my PC.
Right around the time that broken in half keyboard style started getting
popular, it seemed not enough so The Companies decided to almost totally
redesign the keyboard. That left old folks like me having to almost
completely re-learn how to type. Sure, QWERTY are all sill in the same
place, but other important keys like the Insert/Home/Delete keys had
their size changed or just put someplace different all together.
Probably my biggest pet-peeve would be the function keys. Breaking them
up from their organized groups of four wasn't enough! Oh no, they
had to make a function key NOT a function key UNTIL press some
silly little FUNCTION LOCK toggle button. Until that is done, they do
all sorts of things like open your E-Mail Inbox, or My Computer or some
other thing other than act like a function key. I suppose that
double clicking icons just became too much work.

Well, here comes
Saitek to make it all better with their newest product, simply called
The Gaming Keyboard. Given a modern style and straight forward design,
Saitek has definitely gone back to basics. Saitek has moved away from
the over-key clutter that has begun to plague most keyboard designs.
Function keys act like functions keys, and that's it! So when I press F9
in Battlefield Vietnam to make the aircraft's cockpit go away, that's
all that will happen. I won't get rudely dumped out of my game and put
back to the Windows desktop to be greeting by a My Computer window
popping open because I forgot to make sure the FUNCTION KEY lock feature
activated. The Saitek Gaming Keyboard is going to prove there is nothing
wrong with simplicity.
