Momentus 7200.1 vs. 5400.6

To give you an idea on just how fast these new Seagate Momentus 5400.6 notebook hard drives are, I'm tossing in a comparison benchmark against our trusty old Seagate Momentus 7200.1. Another trusty SATA notebook hard drive that we've come to love. So how far has Seagate come alone with their Momentus hard drives in 3 1/2 years and 5 generations later? Let's find out.

When comparing an early generation Momentus 7200.1 to the 6th generation 5400.6, the differences are painfully obvious. The technologic differences we only see on paper, but the performance increase is something we can see and feel.

Conclusion

Even after nearly 4 years and 5 generations later, Seagate is still working harder than ever to make a good drive great. The new Momentus 5400.6 impresses in every way. Finally, an inexpensive notebook hard drive with performance and massive storage ability! Solid State hard drives are here, but you just can't beat the price per gigabyte of the 500GB Momentus. SSDs don't even come close...

Take a good look at the price of this hard drive again, then take a look at what 100GB of notebook storage cost just a few years ago. Yes, that is correct. The Momentus 5400.1 cost around $300 when it first was released back in the fall of 2005. $100 for 500GB of notebook storage is a steal no matter how you look at it.

Seagate has done another fine job with this hard drive. They have boosted performance, increase reliability, added G-Force Protection which enables the hard drive to withstand shocks of up to 1000 Gs, all while lowering the cost per gigabyte. Club Overclocker Recommended.
