Kingwin F-35 Serial ATA External HDD Enclosure

The F-35 comes with all the goodies you would expect; power supply, USB cord, mounting screws, and of course...instructions. The enclosure is quite stunning in red, however, the F-35 also comes in black. I'm not sure which one I personally prefer. The red is definitely flashy, but the black is extremely sexy. The entire enclosure is manufactured out of plastic, with the exception of the internal hard drive bay, which is metal.

The F-35 is cooled by twin 50mm cooling fans, one on each side of the enclosure. The twin cooling fans is probably the most innovative feature I've seen in a HDD enclosure and unique to the F-35. A very nice touch indeed!

By removing a single screw from the bottom, the F-35 opens up like the winged doors on an exotic sports car. From here the hard drive simply slides into the bay, just like a hot swap hard drive bay in a rack mount server.

With a single mounting screw in the top of the drive bay, the hard drive is secured inside the enclosure and it's ready to be closed.

Another reason I like the F-35 is for its simplicity. The hard drive is easy to access and the enclosure is USB interface only. Limiting the enclosure to USB helps keep the price down and simplicity factor high, however it limits the data transfer speed considerably. Regardless, most of us can live with the slower data transfer speeds of USB 2.0 just fine. Plus, you just can't beat the reliability of USB's true plug and play.

Kingwin's goal here seems to be all about the flashy looks, but they didn't stop with the unique style. Kingwin added a cool looking blue activity light in the front of the F-35. Very nice touch...

Conclusion

The Kingwin F-35 has to be the most unique external hard drive enclose on the market today. Although it is mostly plastic, Kingwin had built it extremely well. The F-35 is also one of the best, if not the best cooled hard drive enclosure I've seen to date. The twin cooling fans work in perfectly with the F-35 theme which looks great and cools exceptionally well. The F-35 is easy to access, simple to operate and costs about $35. The Kingwin F-35 has what it takes to make it to the top of our list. Club Overclocker Recommended!
