AeroCool GT-1000 Heatsink Review

Did I mention this baby is big?  Even without the fan, the GT-1000 towers over the rest of the motherboard.  Thanks to the layout of the heat pipes, the heatsink never comes close to the motherboard components.

From the top of the motherboard, the GT-1000 makes a nice match for my gold OCZ DDR kit.  This is the side I will be mounting the fan on.  Although the fan can be added after installation, it is much easier, and safer, to install the fan first.

The included 92 mm fan is clear to show off the gold fins from both sides.  This sleeve bearing fan pushes 37 CFM and runs at about 20 decibels.   I found the AMD 3000+ ran quite well without the fan at stock clocks.

The fan does increase the size of the GT-1000 by almost a third at 25 mm thick but most ATX installs will have plenty of room for air  flow into the power supply.

The top of the GT-1000 features a diamond cut logo and a bracket to cover the ends of the heatpipes.  The resulting effect keeps the window side looking clean and shiny.

Here you can see the finished install.  The gold plated surfaces really shine under the cathode lights.  More importantly the Gt-1000 is quiet at idle both with and without the fan.

Testing:

The test build includes a AMD 64 3000+ mounted on a ASUS A8N-SLI Motherboard.  The Build also includes two BFG 6600GT OC cards, a 2x512 OCZ EL Gold Series DDR set, both a Seagate 120 and a Western Digital 80 gig HDD and a Lite-on DVD burner mounted in an XION Gamer II case.  Additional cooling is provided by two 120 mm fans mounted front and back, and an 80 mm mounted in the window.

This chart shows the temperatures as recorded from the center of the heat sink.  The ambient room temperature was 72 degrees and confirmed at the 120 mm exhaust fan to match.  The XION Gamer II case is well vented and usually matches the ambient room temperature pretty closely.  The AeroCool GT-1000 consistently performs nearly 10 degrees cooler than the OEM unit.

This chart shows the CPU core temperatures both at idle and at load.  A cooler core means a stable CPU.  Here we can really see the advantages over your stock cooler.  Under load the GT-1000 really shows the OEM cooler the door.  The extra cooling also means more room for overclocking!

Conclusion:

AeroCool does a great job at combining the stunning gold plated looks with excellent heatpipe cooling.  During the testing several other techs came over to offer positive comments on the size and looks the GT-1000 provides even through the case window.  Is there such a thing as heatsink envy?  In the performance department, the GT-1000 dominates the OEM cooler, providing a 10 degree difference consistently even overclocked.  My little 3000+ doesn't even require the GT-1000 to break a sweat, even without the included 92 mm fan.  If you are planning a performance gaming build or just looking to increase performance and reduce noise, the GT-1000 is a clear choice.
