Memory Bandwidth

To test memory bandwidth, we are going to look at the Read, Write, and Copy values as tested by Everest. Higher numbers are better:

The Everest memory benchmark is probably has the least volatile results out of all the tests.  The Intel setups have the best write speeds, at about 7100 compared tot he AMD write speeds of 6400-6500.  All of the AMD setups pull ahead quite handsomely in both the Read and the Copy categories, however.

Conclusion

It's exciting to see AMD offering more options for users at all price points.  These two new chips definitely make the mainstream CPU market much more interesting, especially when we look into single-threaded versus multi-threaded types of applications.

For stock performance, both chips hit their price points very well.  The X4 810 especially is dialed in closely with the Q8200, for the most part taking small leads over the competition.  The X3 is a very different story.  For single threaded applications, the E8400 has the definite advantage, but then, when you look at multi-threaded tests, the X3 solidly beats the E8400 in every instance.

As for overclocking, the X3 720 was no surprise.  The unlocked multiplier and the disabled core put us right where we expected.  The X4 810, on the other hand, was quite shocking.  HTT overclocking has been a bit of a lost art, and I thought the low multiplier would essentially limit our potential.  Boy was I wrong.  After easily taking our motherboard to 270HTT, the X4 810 not only beats the stock X4 940, it comes very close to the same performance to the overclocked X4 940 as well, all for a very reasonable price.

Pros:

  • Runs very cool, especially the X3

  • Same overclockability as the Phenom II 920 and 940

  • Future compatibility with AM3 sockets and DDR3

  • Value on par with the competition

Cons:

  • The X4 810 takes a bit of extra work to overclock

  • Doesn't rub my feet after a long day of work
