Rendering and Encoding Tests

Next up are the rendering and encoding tests.  For this, we are going to look at Cinebench, POV-Ray, and x.264-480p.

Cinebench 10

Cinebench 10 is a very well known rendering benchmark that can utilize a single CPU, multiple CPUs, or even GPUs.  For this test, we used Cinebench 10 64-bit, looking at both single threaded and multi-threaded performance.  Higher scores are better.

For the single threaded test, the stock X3 loses out to the E8400, and the X4 edges out the Q8200.  Overclocking on both nets each about a 25% performance boost.  The overclocked X3 in this case actually puts it above the  more expensive X4 940's overclock.

In the multithreaded version of the test, the X3 completely lights up the stock E8400.  The X4 810 again edges out the Q8200, and overclocked is within striking range of the X4 940.

POV-Ray

POV-Ray is another popular rendering benchmark that also supports both single and multiple threads.  Test results are measured in Pixels Per Second, and a higher score is better. For this test, we used version 3.7 beta 29.

The PovRay test tells a similar story to Cinebench 1CPU; the E8400 beats out the X3 at stock, but the high clocking capability of the X3 causes it to overtake the X4 940.  The X4 810 again beats out the Q8200, this time by a wider margin.  The higher overclocking Intel's win the day here, however.

Again, the X3 beats up the stock E8400, and the X4 810 edges out the Q8200.  The X4 810 again is within striking range of the performance of the X4 940.

X.264 Encoding Test

Finally, we have the X.264 encoding test.  In this test, a small video file is encoded into the H.264 format.  There are 5 runs that get two passes each; since each run typically performs identically to the other 4, we are just going to report both passes of the first run.  Higher scores are better.

In the X.264 test, the X3 720 again smokes the E8400, while the X4 810 barely edges out the Q8200.  Overclocked the X4 810 is within 5% of the performance of the X4 940.
