Intel Atom vs.VIA Nano @ [H]ardOCP
Intel Atom vs.VIA Nano - A battle of the most powerful processors on the face of the Earth? Nope. Who sucks the least? Not really, but closer. Marketing teams will have you believe one thing, but we are here today to show HardOCP readers what they likely care about. Which one just works better, Atom or Nano?

"Some of you may be surprised by the results, while others may not. I have to admit, I expected the VIA Nano to come out on top given its superscalar out of order architecture, but I did not expect the Intel Atom to take such an overall beating. The Nano looks like a power efficient version of the Pentium 4 while the Atom looks like a power efficient version of the VIA C7. Everything old is new again?"

Have you ever spent what felt like hours on end looking for a decent gaming keyboard in your local computer store? I know I have. Keyboard after keyboard after keyboard. After a while they all start to look the same. Normally that's because they are. If anyone knows how hard it is to find a good keyboard it's me. After all, I must spend 4 to 8 hours a day behind one typing away and that's not counting game time. I knew it was only a matter of time before doctors started making the link between brain cancer and cell phones... In fact anyone who knows the basics of radio waves understands the dangers of placing any transmitting device up to your head or any other body part. Our understanding of the properties of radiation hasn't changed, but yet society has ignored the warnings. Keep an eye on this subject because I'm willing to bet this subject will explode into something even bigger than smoking or global warming over the next couple years. Read the article over at CNN.

ASUS Lion Square Review
Asus has sent over The Lion Square which is another cooler from their growing line of PC Thermal Solutions. Developed for both AMD and Intel processors, the Lion Square is aimed at PC enthusiasts and Overclockers. They are highlighting some innovative features while still trying to accomplish a near silent PC experience.

While the heatpipe design now dominates the air cooling industry, it's pretty easy to get tired of looking at the square box or orb shaped coolers with big gangly fans hanging off the side. So while it's hard to totally get away from that basic design, Asus has added some aesthetics to the Lion Square to break up the monotony. First, let's look at what we can expect.

Following the introduction of the highly acclaimed HD 4800 series, SAPPHIRE Technology, the leading manufacturer and worldwide supplier of AMD/ATI based graphics solutions is now shipping two new models of HD 4850 providing a further choice of price:performance points for the enthusiast.

The new SAPPHIRE HD 4850 1GB is a new version of the HD 4850 designed by SAPPHIRE for the user who demands more memory for specific applications like rendering. It offers similar overall performance to the standard model, with clock speeds of 625MHz (core) and 993MHz (memory).

450GB Seagate Cheetah 15K.6 SAS Hard Drive Review
To top off your Friday, we have a special treat for all of you computer enthusiasts out there. Today we have a pair of 450GB Seagate Cheetah 15K.6 SAS hard drives to show off. We spend a little time explaining the newest generation of SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) technology and run through a few benchmarks. Want to see some RAID 0 results as well? We have that too!

"Over the years we have tested nearly every size, shape and form of hard drive to hit the market. Everything from IDE to Serial ATA, and yes, even SCSI. Today, we begin writing a new chapter called Serial Attached SCSI or what is known as "SAS" interface hard drives. To most people the "new thing" is still SATA (Serial ATA) as it seems like it was just yesterday when we were testing the very first SATA hard drives. SATA is fast and we've proven that SATA can be just as fast or even faster than SCSI in RAID configurations compared to single SCSI drives. But what's next? Is there anything out there that promises the simplicity and economic advantages of SATA and at the same time deliver the speed and ultra reliability of SCSI? How about SAS (Serial Attached SCSI)? SAS technology has been around for a couple years, but is just now starting to catch on. Although SAS was intended to be a replacement for SCSI, SAS is not and will not be limited to enterprise use only. Do I have your attention? Good, then read on!"

I hate being late, but I say it's best to be a little late than never, so today is our turn to take a shot at the new ATi Radeon HD 4870 video card. Reviewing a video card can be a lot of fun, but that's not even the best part. So what could be better than reviewing the latest and greatest video card you ask?  How about reviewing two!  VisionTek was kind enough to send us over a pair of HD 4870 for our CrossFireX reviewing pleasure and Paul, our local overclocking lunatic, steps up to bat.

I always love it when new items come into the market.  Nothing is better than new CPU's or new Video cards to get people excited about computers.  It's especially exciting when the two largest gaming video card manufacturers release new products within a week of each other.  The last few weeks have been very exciting ones with all sorts of video card reviews popping up all over the net.  Forums have been flooded with new ammunition for the long debate; which video card is better?  I don't think it's possible to answer that question and I'm not going to try.  I'm just going to add more benchmark fuel to the fire and let you make up your own mind.

Come on in, grab a dew from the fridge and check out the review!

OCZ Technology Introduces the Latest DDR3 Kits within the Intel Extreme Memory Series
Sunnyvale, Calif.—July 2, 2008—OCZ Technology Group, a worldwide leader in innovative, ultra-high performance and high reliability memory, today announced the expansion of its Intel® Extreme Memory modules lineup, the latest memory solution that implements a high-performance specification optimized and predefined for the Intel X38 and X48 chipsets. The new modules are rated at DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1600 and feature the all-new Intel branded black XTC heatspreader. With a long history of providing the most innovative products to the enthusiast community, OCZ is excited to take advantage of Intel’s interest and development of overclocking platforms with these latest additions to the series.

Designed to significantly increase performance levels of the entire platform, these modules feature Intel Extreme Memory Profiles (XMP), a proprietary extension of SPD (Serial Presence Detect) settings that act as an integrated “plug and play” overclocking tool. The new Extreme Memory Profile options on the new OCZ DDR3 modules allow the end user to select extreme or ultimate performance through a framework of predefined and validated optimizations of individual settings without the hassle of manually adjusting each parameter, so the timings, voltage, and speed boot automatically for maximum performance.

“We are proud to embrace Intel’s XMP specifications in the new line-up of DDR3 modules,” commented Dr. Michael Schuette, VP of Technology Development at OCZ Technology. “XMP-Ready memory allows safe booting of the system under any circumstances while maintaining the built-in overclocking features to bring out the ultimate performance of the entire system.”
